Presenter Biography: Dr. Macy Burkett is a postdoctoral fellow and researcher in the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas. She holds a Ph.D. in Journalism and Mass Communications, a Master of Science in Digital Content Strategy, and bachelor’s degrees in Apparel and Textiles (apparel marketing specialization) and Vocal Performance. Prior to earning her Ph.D., Macy worked in marketing and social media at KU Recreation Services in Lawrence, Kansas; JNA Advertising in Overland Park, Kansas; and Savvy Bridal in Kansas City, Missouri. Macy’s research interests revolve around social media content creators and how their gender, racial, and sexual identities intersect with their online careers. Macy hopes that her research will shed light on harmful and exclusionary ideologies (e.g., racist, anti-LGBTQ+, and misogynistic ideas) that are often disguised online as religious teachings. Her graduate certificate in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies reinforces her passion for advocating for people of all races, gender identities, and sexual identities in her research through the use of feminist theories and community-oriented projects.
